Health and Safety

The Ceramic Garden takes a rigorous approach to its health and safety. Please read the following risk assessment grid which contains practical steps on how we can keep you safe in the studio.

We deep clean the studio weekly, which involves damp cleaning all the surfaces and thoroughly mopping the floor.

Clay Dust

We ask you to please allocate 20-30 minutes at the end of your session to deep clean your workspace, included surfaces and the floor.

Bringing your own, clean apron (no dust!)

Only The Ceramic Garden staff can operate the kilns. All our electrical equipment is PAT tested.

Electrical Safety

Please ask staff before using any electrical equipment, such as heat guns.

The Ceramic Garden complies with fire safety procedures and government regulations. E.g. Fire blankets and fire extinguishers.

Fire Safety

Please listen to fire safety instructions and be familiar with our fire meeting points on Woodmansterne Road.

We ensure that all harmful materials are stored away in a secure place, away from the main studio. Only staff can access these areas, and they always do so wearing a ceramic-grade dust mask.

By the kiln, we have ventilation systems to avoid toxic materials being spread in the air.

Health risks from toxic substances

You do not access to secure stores containing harmful materials unless supervised by a member of staff wearing a ceramic-grade dust mask.

In line with the Health and Safety Act (1981) we have a fully stocked first aid arrangement, an appointment person (Zoe or Nicola Andrews) to control first aid arrangements and an accident log book.

Minor Injuries

You MUST NOT touch the kilns! Whether they are on or not.

Please be careful when using sharp tools and equipment such as the heat gun. We advise hair to be tied back. In the event of an injury, alert your teacher straight away.

What you do

Whilst our glazed ceramics are food and dishwasher safe, they may retain heat to such an extent that if used in the microwave they may be too hot to handle.

Using your finished pieces

Do not use our products in the microwave unless using gloves.
