1-to-1 troubleshooting

Just can’t get that final bit of centering?

Struggling to realise the shape in your head?

Finding that the clay isn’t rising when you are pulling?

Have a private troubleshooting session with Zoë.

This is designed for intermediate potters who want to focus on a particular skill. If you are a beginner and you would like to learn to throw, please see our taster page.

Send an email saying a bit about your practice and what you are finding is going well. Please then outline what area of throwing you would like to troubleshoot. Ideally send a clip of yourself throwing too. Things could be:

  • Centering

  • Re-centering (Zoë’s favourite…)

  • Lifting clay aka ‘slugs’ (Zoë’s other favourite…)

  • Making things the same size

  • Finding flow: speed and efficiency

  • Scaling up (starting from 4kg+)

  • Scaling down (under 200g)

  • Clay preparation

  • Shaping

  • Glaze making

  • Working with different clay bodies

  • Porcelain

Zoë will reply with bespoke session plan and discuss what weight you would like to work at. Clay will be prepared in advance unless otherwise stated, get ready to use a lot!

Due to the weekend studio being very busy, weekdays are preferable but weekends can be arranged with enough notice. A 2-hour session is recommended, although you may prefer more or less time. As a guide, we will focus on one skill per hour.

The fee is £90/hour for individual tuition.

A second intermediate potter can join for an additional £30/hour.

Firing is not included in this fee, as these sessions are focused on practice and skills development rather than producing finished work. If you would like to keep any pieces, clay is charged at £6/kg. I can trim your pieces for you to collect at bisque, or you can book a session to return and glaze them yourself.
